5 Marks of Prophetic Maturity

Recently, I was invited to speak at Global Awakening’s Voice of the Prophets conference where I felt led to share on the subject of “Prophetic Maturity.” There were many reasons the Lord led me to this topic, including probably the prophetic parable happening in my own home. My oldest son just turned 37 on Saturday, and my youngest daughter is graduating high school. One day after turning 18, the youngest proudly announced that she was an adult now. Quite honestly, Regina and I had to repress a chuckle or two. We know that in real life, seniority does not equal maturity. Neither does familiarity with the prophetic equal prophetic maturity.

The Scripture in Ephesians 4:13,15 makes it very clear that God’s goal for the church is for believers to “become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is Christ.” Prophetic maturity, like the development of adult skills is largely accepting a series of personal responsibilities that lead to increased rewards or blessings. In teen life, that is learning to cook and clean for yourself, work a job, manage a schedule, steward vehicle ownership, and pay some bills. Each responsibility that is embraced has a reciprocal level of freedom and reward. The same is true in the kingdom of God and with the gift of prophecy.

Here are a few abbreviated marks of prophetic maturity that I addressed at the conference:

1. The first mark of prophetic maturity is to embrace the grace of prophecy and stir up your own spiritual gift. 

2. The second mark of prophetic maturity is to test and judge any prophetic words you hear, see, or receive. 

3. The third mark of prophetic maturity is to partner with Holy Spirit in mobilizing and activating your prophetic words. 

4. The fourth mark of prophetic maturity is to exercise and practice your prophetic gifts on a regular basis. 

5. The fifth mark of prophetic maturity is to seek to reveal Jesus in all things.
